"Shattering Representations with Drops, Lines, and Spokes"
Written by Ms. Kaye O'yek
Galerie Anna presents Iconoclasts, featuring selected abstract artists as figure-breakers while they introduce their own takes on creating contemporary images.
Binong Javier places his multicolored pigments on top of each other, creating spectrums of color which, when examined closely, look like uniform drops of pure pigment. Whether Javier decides to create concentric circles, stripes or waves in his pieces, a gradation is almost always present, allowing the sight to flow smoothly from one point to another without jarring transitions. In the way the artist packs the paint drops together, one is reminded by fish scales, an armadillo’s armor, sunflower’s center, the heaving masses, or even the density of the urban population reminiscent of horror vacui which seems to pervade most Filipino sensibilities. Binong Javier’s recent work has been shortlisted for the 2020 Philippine Art Awards. In 2018, he was feted with the Juror’s Choice Award in the AAP On the Spot Painting Competition, second place in the Robinsons Land National Art Competition and honorable mention at the GSIS National Art Competition nonrepresentational category.
