EVENT DESCRIPTION

Dragon dances, fashion shows, Chinese painting workshops, musical events, and lots of Chinese movies. These are just some of the activities that await guests of the 13th Spring Film Festival, to be held in the Shangri-La Plaza from January 30 to February 5, 2019.

Organized by the Ateneo Ricardo Leong Center for Chinese Studies and Ateneo Celadon, the official Chinese-Filipino organization of the Ateneo de Manila University, together with Shangri-La Plaza, Red Carpet, and Credit Suisse, with the participation of the Film Development Council of the Philippines and Chinoy TV, the festival welcomes the Year of the Pig through various events and Chinese films throughout the week.

The Gala Night on January 30 will open the 13th Spring Film Festival with a dragon and lion dance performance, a Chinese painting exhibit, and a fashion show featuring elegant Chinese costumes, all of which will certainly thrill guests. The Gala Night will also feature the movie “Our Time Will Come” by renowned Director Ann Hui. A war film set during the Second World War, it tells the complex story of the Hong Kong resistance against the invading Japanese from 1941-1945.

The festival will also feature a selection of different Chinese movies through the week.

Based on the real story of Jackie Chan’s parents, “A Tale of Three Cities” shows how they fell in love, were separated due to the Chinese Civil War, and reunited in Hong Kong.

From the romantic-drama genre, the festival will showcase “I Belonged to You”, the story of a broken-hearted DJ and his new intern—who he falls in love with.

Guests will also be able to watch “Lost in White”, a movie whose plot revolves around the finding of a corpse that leads two detectives to way more than just a regular murder investigation.

Again from the romantic genre, “The Third Way of Love” features the union of a rich man and an intelligent woman.

From the mystery genre and with a touch of adult material, “Detective Chinatown” portrays how a man is falsely accused of murder–and his daring resolve to find the true killers.

Last but not least, the comedy film “Lost in Hong Kong” features a married middle-aged man who tries to reconnect with his first love at university, only to be stopped by a murder investigation.

The Chinese Musical Event will showcase the many talents of Chinese-Filipino youth in the art of singing and dancing; an afternoon that will surely promise entertainment and delight for the patrons of Shangri-La Plaza!

Chinese Painting Workshop (Sunday, February 3, 2pm-4pm)

The Chinese Painting Workshop once again welcomes the expertise of the president of the Art Association of the Philippines, Master Fidel M. Sarmiento, together with vice president Roger Santos as they dazzle guests with a demonstration and workshop for Shangri-La Patrons. The workshop by Master Sarmiento surely shouldn’t be missed!
